New German Cinema
On February 28, 1962, at the Oberhausen short film festival, 26 young filmmakers signed a single page. It closes with: 'The old film is dead. We believe in the new one.' The line more often quoted — 'Daddy's cinema is dead' — isn't actually in the manifesto itself. It was the title of a press conference held the same day (this map had it wrong at first too, and corrected it against the record). Wim Wenders, who came out of this wave, later visited Yasujiro Ozu's grave and made 'Tokyo-Ga' (1985). In its opening, he says that if there's still anything sacred in this century, anything you could call cinema's holy treasure, for him it's the work of Yasujiro Ozu. A line runs from here to the band at the far right of this map.
