Magic Lantern
Projecting an image onto a wall in a dark room, with light — the longest rehearsal before cinema's opening night. From the 17th century onward, for more than two centuries, the magic lantern cultivated the very habit of gathering in the dark to look up at light. The audience, in other words, was ready before the machine was. This connects to the last thing written on this map: a 1897 Melies film that had been missing for over a hundred years turned up in the travelling trunk of a showman who had toured with magic lantern slides.
